Summer holiday guide: Print off our checklist of 50 School Holiday Ideas

Helen WintertonThe West Australian

Warm days and balmy nights make these school holidays better than ever for energy-burning fun. And while this is longest — and possibly the most challenging — school break of the year, we’ve found plenty of activities, outings and events to keep everyone in your tribe happy.

Our new checklist of 50 School Holiday Ideas has something for everyone, from free and easy outings to seeing hilarious magic shows as part of Fringe World or their favourite stories brought to life on the stage.

Movie editor Ben O’Shea reminds us that while air-conditioned cinemas are perfect for escaping the heat during the day, you only have to look to the cool summer nights to enjoy a movie under the stars. Perth is becoming the outdoor cinema capital of Australia, with venues close to nature at Kings Park or among the friendly quendas in Mundaring or even on a rooftop in Northbridge.

And imagine the kids' surprise when they find out they can watch a latest release on the big screen from the back of the car at Kingsley’s Galaxy drive-in.

On warmer days try the magic element of water to put a skip in their step with a free splash zone in the city, playgrounds with random jets and sprays, or take your thrill seekers to Outback Splash to discover if The Wedgie waterslide lives up to its name.

The luxury of having more time on our hands offers the chance to put the clock-watching aside to indulge in carefree outings like taking a train ride just to discover the latest creative gelato flavours or going on a day trip to Rotto to snorkel and munch down on a pie at the bakery.

If all else fails and the youngsters are still full of energy, then head to Scitech where they can find out what it’s like to be invisible. Just remember to bring them home!
