Perth Breakfast & Brunch: Three Little Pigs, South Fremantle, is much more than its social media-ready drinks

It was the bright pink, pig-shaped ice-cubes that drew me in. In the world of brunch there are drinks and there are drinks. The excellent drinks at Three Little Pigs in Fremantle are definitely drinks, although there’s not a drop of alcohol in them. There are plenty of venues in Perth to go for the kind of bottomless brunch designed to leave you legless, but this isn’t it. Go for the Choc Pink (sala syrup, milk and chocolate), Fizzy Anchan (butterfly pea tea topped up with lemonade and gold leaf) and a Dirty Thai Milk Tea (just what it sounds like, made with condensed milk and double espresso) and you’re just scraping the surface of what’s on offer here. Technicolour and social media ready, Three Little Pigs’ drinks could so easily have been a disappointing stunt to lure in punters for a lacklustre meal. Instead they’re the cherry perched atop a delightful sundae of a meal. Which is a confusing way of saying: the drinks are great but they’re far from the only reason to check out this South Fremantle cafe. Three Little Pigs is bigger than its modest exterior suggests: there’s a handful of tables outside but a much bigger dining room inside, cheerfully overseen by a giant pig mural. It’s cuter than it sounds. The brunch menu is a mix of classics and quirk. The Miso Miso Scrambled Eggs is a plate of beautiful folded eggs made with miso butter, nori and dried bonita flakes, all of which work to give it an unami hit. A side dish of sauteed mushrooms is phenomenal: rich, salty and earthy in the best possible way and cooked to the point where they’re perfectly crispy at the edges. “Avo cuddles” is a cute name for a big smashed avo dish that comes with feta, greens and a kick of lemon, all of which is enlivened by a crunch of seeds. There’s also a sticky rice pudding, served with yoghurt and granola and a benny brisket where the brisket has been cooked in coconut curry sauce. Three Little Pigs also offers a build-your-own-breakfast option to choose how you want your eggs and pick from the big list of add-ons, including hollandaise, chilli bacon and hash browns. It’s a nice idea whose time, surely, has come. Three Little Pigs is a relaxed, fun and slick family-run operation. It’s is a lot more than a gimmicky iceblock or a drinks list: it’s a blast. The verdict: 15/20 Come for the drinks, stay for the those mushrooms.
