Busselton’s South West Wine Shop named nation’s best wine bar in Gourmet Traveller’s annual Restaurant Awards

A groundbreaking bottle shop in Busselton has won national honours in the Gourmet Traveller 2025 Restaurant Awards, held in Sydney on Monday night. South West Wine Shop, part of the Parker Group-owned Busselton Pavilion, was named wine bar of the year in the magazine’s annual appraisal of the best and brightest in Australia’s dining scene. Gourmet Traveller praised the selection of wines as well as the “joyous attitude” of wine director Cyndal Petty at the venue, which only opened in January. “Whether you’re chasing hard-to-find bottles from local vignerons … or benchmarks from further afield, the shelves and fridges here are all-killer, no-filler,” the magazine gushes in its September edition. The foodie bible also served up kind words for the “polished pub cooking” of Parker Group executive chef Brendan Pratt and “cheery” shop manager Hayley Ward — both worked at Vasse Felix before joining John Parker’s burgeoning hospitality stable, which also includes Perth venues The Standard, The Royal and Dandelion. Gourmet Traveller said Busselton Pavilion was part of the South West centre’s emergence as a tourism hotspot alongside the recently opened Hilton Garden Inn hotel and direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne. “South West Wine Shop looks like it’s going to be around for both a good time as well as a long time.” Italian-inspired all-day café and wine bar Casa in Mt Hawthorn was the WA winner for Gourmet Traveller’s restaurant of the year state title. Overall honours went to a Tasmanian eatery for the first time in the 45-year history of the award. The Agrarian Kitchen Restaurant in New Norfolk, Tasmania claimed the top gong, with chef-owner Rodney Dunn — a former Gourmet Traveller food editor — his wife Severine Demanet and head chef Stephen Peak collecting the award at the gala event at Sydney’s Catalina restaurant in Rose Bay on Monday night. Gourmet Traveller editor Joanna Hunkin said that, since opening in 2008, The Agrarian Kitchen has gone from a small farm and cooking school in the Derwent Valley to a “global dining destination”. “The work Rodney and Severine have put into transforming the property and its gardens, and establishing a truly sustainable food system, is extraordinary,” Ms Hunkin said at the ceremony. “Tonight’s honour recognises that thoughtfulness and commitment and is testament to the fact that good things take time.” Finnish-born and Sydney-based chef Paci Petanen from Café Paci was named chef of the year and won the State category for NSW. Sydney’s mod-Asian diner King Clarence took out the best new restaurant gong, while Alla Wolf-Tasker from regional Victorian institution Lake House, which opened 40 years ago, accepted the readers’ choice icon award — the only publicly voted honour. Best destination dining, which was awarded to Karridale’s Glenarty Road last year, went to French-inspired Chauncy in Heathcote, Victoria, while the Victorian state gong went to Melbourne mainstay Vue de Monde. Ms Hunkin said the Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards recognise the “incredible depth and diversity of Australia’s dining landscape”.
