A bushfire watch and act warning has been downgraded to advice level for northern parts of Narrikup in the Great Southern after the fire threat has been reduced on Tuesday afternoon.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued the warning just after 1pm, urging the public to be aware of a possible ember attack, issuing a watch and act alert.

However that was downgraded to advice level just after 2pm and remains in place for people in the area bounded by Jackson Road, Old Coach Road, Albany Highway, Watermans Road, Townshend Road and Reynolds Road in the northern part of Narrikup — about 17km south of Mt Barker.

DFES say the alert level has been downgraded as the threat of fire has reduced and although there is no immediate danger, people need to stay aware in case the situation changes.

The blaze was first reported at just before 11am on Tuesday, with the bushfire now moving in a northerly direction but still remains not contained or controlled.

Firefighters are strengthening containment lines in the area.

A bushfire advice warning is also in place for people in an area bounded by Albany Highway, Jackson Road and Settlement Road in the southern parts of Narrikup.

Another update is expected at 4pm on Tuesday.
