Students from South Stirling, Borden and Cranbrook primary schools hit the court earlier this month to battle out for regional dominance in the Lower Great Southern’s Tennis Classic at Mt Barker Tennis Club.

Four teams from five primary schools competed in the Lower Great Southern Zone’s Tennis Classic at Mt Barker Tennis Club on March 11, vying for the chance to compete against other regional school finalists from all over the State for the coveted Academy Plate on March 21.

A combined Cranbrook/Borden team proved victorious against South Stirling, Kendenup and Wellstead primary schools, earning their place representing the Lower Great Southern zone at the Champion Schools Tennis Classic.

Runners-up South Stirling also got to play finals at the State Tennis Centre in Perth.

The teams consist of students from Year 3-6 and require two boys and two girls to play.

Event organiser Shannon Slade said it was great to see the event return to the Lower Great Southern zone after several years.

“The students get to represent their schools and meet others from around the region, testing their abilities,” she said.

“All the students showed excellent sportsmanship, and we hope to see this event grow in future years.”

Slade thanked Radu Vaidean from Tennis West who assisted with the organisation of the event and Mt Barker Tennis Club for allowing use of its facilities for the day.
