Augusta-Margaret River Shire could see surge in support for Yes campaign for Indigenous Voice to Parliament

The local group campaigning for the Yes case in the upcoming national referendum on the Aboriginal Voice to Parliament says the Augusta-Margaret River Shire could prove to be one of its strongest bases for support. The feedback comes as the Yes campaigners plan for a community swim-out at Gnarabup on Sunday, September 24, co-ordinated with Amnesty International Margaret River. Group spokeswoman Sarah Flynn told the Times the Yes campaign was receiving strong public support and now boasted more than 60 volunteers. “I’ve been thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response to the Yes campaign in the Margaret River region,” she said. “We’ve been out talking to people at flyer stalls, delivering information pamphlets, knocking on doors, and answering questions non-stop for months now.” Ms Flynn said Augusta-Margaret River shire residents were asking good questions and resisting the perceived negativity of the No campaign. Although media pundits were widely tipping the Voice campaign to fail, residents in the shire were expected to turn out in strong support based on campaign feedback. “They are smart enough to come and ask ‘How does this referendum provide better outcomes for Indigenous people in my community?’” Ms Flynn said. “It’s our region’s chance to have a say in Indigenous Australians being recognised in our country’s constitution and finally be given a voice on issues that directly affect their communities.” Sunday’s swim-out from Gnarabup, which starts at 8.30am, was a visible way for Yes supporters to show their backing for the Voice, local Amnesty spokesperson Rod Whittle said. “After the success of our recent Walk For Yes along the main street of town, we are proud to support another opportunity for the region to come together and show their support to the Yes campaign,” he said. “Parliament needs to listen to Indigenous communities to make effective policy decisions on matters that affect them — it’s that simple.” Campaign volunteer Kathleen O’Shea said Sunday’s event would include information stalls for those still deciding how to vote. The idea is that people will come along and find out more about the campaign by having a chat with us at the beach,” she said. “Then if they like, they can hop into the water, swim out offshore for a bit, and form a large circle in the water in solidarity for a Yes vote in this referendum. “This is the perfect opportunity to come and ask your questions if you’re unsure about how to vote.” The referendum poll will be held on Saturday, October 14, one week before local government elections.
