The final six State surfing champions have been crowned for 2024, with the Capes region boasting strong representation.

The third and final round of the State Junior Surfing Titles finished at Geraldton’s Flat Rocks on Sunday, with almost 100 of WA’s best juniors taking part in the three-day event.

Pumping surf made for what Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks labelled an “unforgettable finale” to this year’s series that anointed Dunsborough charger Maverick Wilson the under-18 boys’ division winner and Margaret River’s Ruby Berry as the under-18 girls State champion.

On points, Margaret River’s Okie Fraser was confirmed as the 2024 under-18 boys champion.

Joining the winners on the podium were fellow Dunsborough surfers Ollie Holmes in the micro-groms under-12s and under-16 boys’ Cruz Uros.

Margaret River’s Olive Hardy took home the under-16 girls’ trophy and the under-14 girls champ was Ily Fraser.

Clean and consistent three to four-foot surf and great weather greeted contenders, who joined champions confirmed in the previous two rounds of the annual contest.

“I’d like to congratulate our newly crowned junior State champions, as well as our divisional winners and finalists, for an exciting title race in 2024,” Majeks said.

“The WA Junior Surfing Titles has showcased the depth of talent in WA and their ability to adapt to different locations and conditions, which will be crucial for success at the nationals.”

Fraser was ebullient at his win and was looking forward to taking on the rest of the country over east later this year.

“It’s been my goal to win the title this year,” he said.

“The boys all surf so well and the waves have been pumping, so I’m stoked to get some good waves.”

Fraser came in second to Wilson on a close call, but consistency across this year’s competition propelled him forward.

Berry was freshly returned from competitive surfing on the east coast and welcomed a return to WA waters.

“It’s nice to be surfing over reef and in waves with real power and push,” she said.

“This is my final year in the Juniors and to win the State title means a lot to me.

“I can’t wait for the National Titles and want to thank my mum and dad for all their support.”

Dunsborough’s Kade Martin won the under-16 division in fine form, but was edged out on championship points by Uros.
