Gas Bay will come alive this weekend with the local round of the WA Bodyboard Championships.

The iconic event for bodyboarders returns to the Margaret River region after making a splash on Surfing WA’s events calendar last year, manager Justin Majeks told the Times.

“WA has always been a breeding ground of amazing talent, with the likes of Ryan Hardy, Sean Virtue, and Brad Hughes pushing the sport forward through the late 90s and early 2000s,” he said.

“We’re thrilled to be hosting the event at Gas Bay and I wish all our competitors the best of luck.”

While reigning Australian champions Ebony Schell and Kia De Legh will headline the field, established and up-and-coming Capes competitors were expected to make their mark too.

Veteran Ben Veitch and Dunsborough’s Chad Jackson will be among those contenders that also include Yallingup’s Sean Obherholzer. Margaret River pair Lee Wilson and Michael Reid were also expected to fly the flag at the weekend event that starts tomorrow, March 9.

Bodyboarders will compete across all divisions including the under-14 grommets and the over-45 grand masters class.

Schell comes into the event full of confidence after taking part in her first International Bodyboarding Corporation event recently in Morocco where she placed 17th overall.

The 20-year-old will be out to win her third consecutive Australian title in 2024.
