Climate change-driven review of coastal risks and community infrastructure: Shire of Augusta-Margaret River

Coastal hazards are in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River’s sights, with a new public consultation designed to identify areas of significant risk across the region. Consultants Land Insights are running the new survey to identify potential climate change-induced hazards as well as risk-management options to address areas of concern. The region has significant areas requiring further investigation, but Shire sustainable planning officer Jared Drummond said coastal zones around Gnarabup-Prevelly and Augusta were the key focus. “The review follows recent technical assessments by coastal engineers and aims to inform appropriate design of public infrastructure along our coastline in the medium to long-term,” Mr Drummond said. “Land Insights are holding a series of community workshops as part of their plan preparation and we’ll be asking the community for feedback on the draft plan, expected to be available in early 2024.” All data will feed into the review of the Shire’s Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan. The Shire plan would “develop appropriate responses to coastal management based on community expectations, technical expertise, resources, environmental impacts and collaboration with coastal managers,” the local government said. “The survey tells us how the community values different sections of the coastline, environmentally, socially and economically,” Mr Drummond said. “It also provides an opportunity for community to provide high-level feedback on future management of the coastline.” Planning for coastal infrastructure faces many challenges in the region, with concern about environmental degradation halting potential facilities and additional carparking at popular beach spots, while the region’s notorious cliffs and limestone karst system add extra challenges.
