Workshops will be held next week to canvas views among residents about ways to protect the Augusta-Margaret River coastline.

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River is developing a management plan for about 5.5km of the Prevelly/Gnarabup coast, which includes more than 130ha of reserves.

Shire landcare services co-ordinator John McKinney said consultation would be led by environmental consultant Drew McKenzie with the first session tomorrow at the River Mouth carpark at 1pm and Surfers Point at 3pm. Consultation was also planned for Sunday, with a 1pm meeting at the White Elephant and 3pm at the Grunters carpark.

“Prevelly and Gnarabup have significant environmental and cultural values and are such special places to many people, so we really encourage community input to ensure that local views and insight can be considered,” Mr McKinney said.

“The development of this plan is an important step in protecting and restoring the diverse cultural and environmental values of this coastal strip.

“The plan will help us prioritise future management actions and seek funding to implement those actions.”

Other submissions were open until next Friday, May 28, via amrshire@amrshire.wa.gov.au.

Critics have already questioned the Shire’s plan at the same time the Gnarabup headland faces intensive development from the proposed Westin Margaret River Resort & Spa and associated village estate. A draft report including recommendations would then go before the council before seeking formal consultation.
