A long-awaited project to integrate the region’s public artworks in one interactive trail was unveiled last week.

The Shire of Augusta Margaret River and Creative Corner launched the street art project Margaret River Art Trails which connects installations in Cowaramup and Prevelly, with Augusta to follow soon.

Shire sustainable economy officer Saul Cresswell said the interactive website included almost 60 artworks so far created by residents as well as national artists.

Trail users could scan QR codes at each location to learn more about the piece, meet the artists, and reveal behind-the-scenes footage.

“This creative collaboration adds another uniquely local flavour to our townsites and provides increased exposure for local artists, shining a light on the immense creative talent in the region,” Mr Cresswell said.

“These trails are an invitation to engage with local art in a way that is fun and insightful, exploring hidden gems and taking time to appreciate our townsites.

“Much of the art reflects upon what it means to live here, celebrating a sense of belonging and community connection,” he said.

Creative Corner manager Anita Pettit said the trail – which captured public and privately-commissioned artworks – would continue to grow and evolve with future projects.

“The art trails will continue to grow and evolve over time,” she said.

“We’re really excited to see more street art popping up in Augusta and look forward to the addition of those works to an Augusta-specific trail.”

It was also revealed the project would later include augmented reality options, courtesy of Margaret River-based Phi Media’s Mike Dunn.
