Margaret River Karate Club junior Catto Hackett aims for trip to Japan with fundraising help sought
Margaret River up-and-coming karate star Catto Hackett is seeking help to fund a dream trip to compete in his beloved sport in Japan.
A Margaret River Karate Club stalwart, Catto was slated to join more than six more senior fighters and support crew when they head to Takanabe in southern Japan in March.
But the big trip is a costly endeavour and despite fundraising more help is being sought to allow the 12-year-old to follow in his mentor’s footsteps to the home of Shotokan karate.
Catto’s father Ian said the family wanted to thank local businesses that had already helped out or offered prizes in a fundraising raffle.
“This is an incredible opportunity that has come his way,” he said.
“Many senior teachers at the club see Catto as a consistent, dedicated, friendly young person with real potential in the sport of karate.
“We are actively seeking sponsorship and contributions to raise the required funds and are sincerely grateful for any support.”
Catto has participated in karate since he was four years old and the invitation from sensei Ken Rouw was a prized chance to hone his skills alongside senior members and fighters from other international clubs.
Catto said he was thrilled at the prospect of the trip with his fellow club members.
“My goals in Japan are to do my best, have a great time there, and learn from the experience,” he said.
“I hope to do well in the kata section of the tournament.
“I am looking forward to travelling with the group, competing in the tournament and experiencing Japan to see the place and a different culture.”
