The organisers of next year’s Margaret River Ultramarathon will be under pressure to increase capacity in future years after the limited spots in the next event sold out within just 27 hours.

With more than 1000 of the tickets already pre-booked, only 400 places were up for grabs and were hotly contested due to the marathon’s premier reputation, organisers said.

“We feel truly honoured and completely flattered at runners’ enthusiasm to be part of this landmark event,” Rapid Ascent general manager Sam Maffett said.

“The fervour, camaraderie and scenery along the course are no doubt all part of the allure.

“We knew there’d be a high demand on entries based on previous years, but credit goes to the 2024 entrants themselves for showing their willingness to challenge themselves and help make the event so special.”

The ultra marathon is regarded as one of WA’s most in-demand races and entry numbers have doubled since its debut in 2018.

Organisers put a limit on competitor numbers to preserve the athletes’ experiences as well as reduce pressure on the race’s scenic coastal route undertaken during the race.

The 80km point-to-point course starts at Hamelin Bay and continues through to Howard Park Wines in Wilyabrup.

Last year’s women’s winner Anna McKenna said tall forests and fierce coastlines were part of the interstate appeal of the competition.

The marathon is scheduled for May 11 and 12 next year.
