Local motorists have a rare chance to claim their Augusta identity with the release of a limited batch of number plates.

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River has just 25 of the coveted Augusta plates for sale during March, according to customer service team leader Vicki Scott.

“These rare AU district plates are very popular and are always snapped up quickly,” she said.

“In previous years, we’ve had people lining up from the early hours of the morning to secure a plate.”

No Augusta plates were released last year because the numbers failed to meet the Department of Transport’s minimum batch requirements.

Ms Scott said the low-number Augusta plates became available only when existing owners gave them up.

Shire president Julia Meldrum encouraged keen motorists to get in early for their chance to nab the rare identifiers.

“The AU number plates are highly sought after and a proud way for people to identify themselves as a local,” she said.

“The plates being made available are for the numbers under 1000. They only become available when someone relinquishes them.”

The sale will start at 9am on Thursday, March 21, at the shire offices in Margaret River.
