Surf movie to debut at Beerfarm in Metricup during April’s Margaret River Pro
Two young film enthusiasts have produced their own surf movie that will debut during next month’s Margaret River Pro.
Anthony Spencer and John Spencer, who aren’t related, combined their efforts for the 30-minute flick Hurry & Wait that will premiere at the Beerfarm alongside a collaborative art exhibition, drinks and music on April 11.
John handled the technical duties behind the camera while Anthony is the inadvertent star of the film that follows his surfing adventures and various mishaps at local and Indonesian surf breaks during an extended stint of good conditions last year.
Friends helped with the final production and Anthony edited the footage.
Anthony explained the project started after a stroke of good fortune when he moved to Margaret River just before the pandemic and found a room with John.
“I was surfing every day and John asked one day if he could borrow my camera gear to try and come get some footage of me,” Anthony said.
“From there on he has filmed pretty much every session since.”
Both men worked online and travelled to the Sumbawa islands, where some of the footage was shot.
“I got some of the best waves of my life, but also where I experienced some of my lowest lows and serious injury and infections from the reef and food poisoning,” Anthony said.
“Fortunately, John was there to capture all of the food moments.”
The pair said they decided to formalise their efforts to do more than just post reels on Instagram.
The April 11 event will include music from Cat Nights and Oscar Mier alongside art from Chris Hancock, DG Imagery, Bayley Turner, Georgia Hanson and Pat Agustin.
Artworks and prints will be for sale and there will be a raffle with prizes including two MV2 Thomas Surfboards.
Tickets to the show are available via Humantix.
