Margaret River’s top cop Sgt Luke Fowler has warned desperate residents not to turn to crime during the COVID-19 pandemic, after local officers arrested a 37-year-old man on a string of charges on Wednesday.

Officers started investigating the Margaret River resident after an alleged break-in at Chang Thai Kitchen on Station Road on March 9.

Sgt Fowler alleged the man entered the restaurant through a window and stole the tip jar and four drinks before leaving.

On April 1, police claim the same man entered Margaret River’s Liquorland and took a four-pack of drinks without paying.

Officers executed a search warrant at the man’s home on Wednesday.

Police found evidence of the alleged thefts and charged the man with burglary and commit, two counts of stealing, and possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

“We understand that people are doing it tough in the current climate, with employment, travel restrictions and housing all potential issues,” Sgt Fowler said. “However, crime targeting those businesses and people trying to stay afloat in an already challenging environment won’t be tolerated.

“The community doesn’t tolerate thieves. You’ll end up banned from places you may enjoy, on bail with curfew conditions, or locked up. It’s just not worth it.”
