Yallingup’s Richard Wain was the only Capes surfer to make a name for himself at the weekend’s 2024 WA SUP Championship at Geraldton.

Surfers descended on the Batavia coast for the second week in a row after the successful final round of Surfing WA’s junior surf titles.

The weekend’s stand-up game drew fewer Capes competitors than the other surfing forms, with the majority of heats taken out by city athletes.

Greenwood’s Peter Tomsett took out the open men’s division in a weekend of consistent performances, while shortboard afficionado Isi Campbell from Denmark wowed the crowds by beating off the women’s competition.

Wain competed in the open men’s 10ft SUP division as well as the over 60s men’s, scoring a second and a third respectively.

The veteran told the Times he was stoked as a 65-year-old to make the men’s open against much younger competition.

“I had a tougher time in the over 60s against two goofy-footers that gave them the edge in the racy left handers,” he said.

“I got third place. Super fun weekend as always with the SUP crew.”

The Yallingup surfers also noted “a bit of carnage” on the day with the fast-breaking wave that broke two boards and left one competitors with a dislocated shoulder.

Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks congratulated all participants.

“Geraldton tuned it on again for our WA SUP community and we saw many new competitors leave their mark with some great surfing and sportsmanship,” he said.

“I wish all our national title qualifiers the best of luck and think Team WA will do very well on Phillip Island.”

State champions would represent WA at the Australian SUP Titles scheduled to be held in Victoria in October.
