Margaret River junior surfing sensation Ily Fraser has come up trumps in the GromSearch national titles at Sydney’s Urbnsurf wave pool.

She came second in her age division against the best female surfers in the country.

Fraser said she was thrilled with the outcome after securing a berth as a wildcard at the October 21 contest.

The showdown featured the best 12 surfers in every age division in the country competing for line honours.

The under-12 division was ultimately claimed by NSW surfer Mila Grainger.

The wave pool setting created its challenges for the young surfers, with Fraser saying the left-hand wave was particularly “sucky” and hard to get up.

The competition had numerous surfers falling from their boards amid efforts to score rides on three left and right-handed waves.

The best left and right-handed wave contributed to the final tally, which edged Fraser ahead of nearest rival Everly Morgan from Milton, NSW.

The winners’ list was dominated by NSW and Victorian surfers, with Fraser the only WA surfer to make the finals.

Two-time world champion Tyler Wright was on hand to see the next generation of Australian surfing talent.

“I’m so impressed with the level of surfing here,” she said after the event.

“I remember loving the GromSearch events as a junior, but don’t remember the level of surfing being so high.

“Everyone is ripping and the future of Australian surfing looks to be in great hands.”

Fraser is next touted to attend the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Wollongong at the end of this month, though she would be competing in the under-14s competition due to a lack of lower divisions.
