Residents in Northam have been told it’s “too late to leave” as a raging bushfire puts lives and homes at risk.

An emergency warning was issued for residents in south westerly corner of Northam’s townsite about 12.45pm on Wednesday.

Residents bounded by Spencers Brook Road, Wellington St West, Morrell Street and Jacamar Drive are told they must shelter inside their homes as the blaze has already impacted evacuation routes.

Leaving now could be deadly.

It was first reported at 11.55am and was upgraded to an emergency level a short time later, already razing 50ha.

Two water bombers and two helitaks are assisting firefighters on the ground.

It both uncontained and unpredictable as it moves in a southerly direction.

“You need to identify a room in your home where you can shelter from the approaching fire,”

“It should have running water, such as a kitchen or laundry, and have a clear exit so you can easily escape.”

“You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you before the flames reach you,” an emergency alert said.

“Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners but keep water running through the system if possible.”

A separate watch and act alert is in place for land south of Throssell Street and adjacent to Spencers Brook Road.

An evacuation centre has opened at the Northam recreation centre on Peel Terrace.

Northam detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Anyone who sees suspicious behaviour is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
