Second man charged with kidnapping, torture after man dies following alleged assault in Brisbane’s south

A second man has been hit with a string of charges – including kidnapping and torture – following the death of a man who was allegedly kidnapped along with two others in Brisbane’s south. Police will allege a 52-year-old man was assaulted near Rudyard St in Inala about 6.30pm on January 5. Officers were called to Logan Hospital about 12.30am on January 6 after the man presented with significant head injuries. Despite being transported to a specialist care facility, the 52-year-old died from his injuries on January 7. Detective Inspector Chris Knight said police would allege the 52-year-old had met two friends and others at Rudyard St about 6.30pm on January 5. Inspector Knight said police would allege from there the 52-year-old was taken along with two others “against their will and under the threat of extreme violence”. “They were taken to another location where they were (allegedly) subject to more violence over a number of hours,” Inspector Knight said. The friends of the 52-year-old were allegedly injured, including one with a broken leg, and had “fairly serious facial injuries”. “Their safety is a key concern for us,” he said. “The surviving (alleged) victims of this need to be treated very delicately.” Police searched a Bukulla St commercial business in Wacol on January 12. A crime scene remained in place as of Thursday as forensic examinations continued. A 32-year-old Griffin man was arrested about 8am on Thursday. He was charged with one count each of murder, armed robbery and grievous bodily harm. He was also charged with two counts each of kidnapping and torture. He is set to front Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday. The fresh charges come after Birkdale man Samuel Vernon, 31, was charged with one count each of murder, grievous bodily harm, armed robbery and two counts each of torture and kidnapping last week. Mr Vernon fronted Brisbane Magistrates Court last week and was remanded in custody. Police are set to allege the men were all known to each other. Photos of a silver Jaguar sedan have been released that’s of interest to police. Anyone with information has been urged to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
