Top international surfers make most of Margaret River Pro lay days in the South West

Whether they are hitting the golfing range, grabbing a sweet treat from the bakery or taking in the picturesque WA coastline, the world’s top surfers are certainly making the most of their time out of the water in the South West.

The Margaret River Pro has again attracted the biggest and best names in the sport from across the globe to the tourist town, but tricky weather conditions — that have seen the competition called off until at least Friday — have seen athletes turn the trip into the ultimate holiday.

Among those getting out and about down South is world No.1 Filipe Toledo, who took to the Margaret River Golf Club for an afternoon on the green on Tuesday, telling his one million Instagram followers he had “tried golf for the first time”.

The Brazilian favourite has also stopped to pose for selfies with fans around town and took some time at Surfer’s Point despite the unfavourable weather.

But Toledo isn’t the only one using golf to pass the time, with household name and top American surfer Kelly Slater and long-time girlfriend Kalani Miller also sharing pictures at the MRGC to their social media followers.

Hometown hero Jack Robinson posted a collection of pictures from the past week with the caption: “Lay days in the west are the best.”

The Margaret River athlete and his wife Julia Muniz have taken helicopter rides and shared images from their resort during the competition’s lay days.

Top female surfer Carissa Moore has also switched into holiday mode, posting selfies and snaps from around town, also proclaiming that the “west is best”.

The global competition is expected to resume on Friday, pending conditions.
