Lightscape 2024: Glamping experience with Heyscape tiny cabins coming to Kings Park this winter

A new glamping experience will be trialled in Kings Park this winter — marking the first time overnight accommodation has been available in the sprawling inner-city reserve. Three tiny cabins will be available to book, as part of an initial trial, for the duration of Lightscape 2024, from June 7 to July 28, at a cost of $495 per night — and a minimum two-night stay. The tiny cabins are operated by WA company Heyscape, which runs similar experiences at seven spots in regional WA including Busselton, the Avon Valley, Chittering, Serpentine, Esperance and Yallingup. The cabins — to be located at the DNA tower and near the Swan and Balga carparks — provide guests access to a bed, kitchenette and Wi-Fi. The areas will be cordoned off, ensuring privacy for guests as they sleep under the stars. The experience is designed to have a minimal impact on the environment, using solar panels, portable water and composting. It is understood the trial could lead to a more permanent accommodation offering for tourists who want to stay overnight in the 400 hectare reserve. Last year’s Lightscape attracted nearly 180,000 people, with the 2024 event set to be centred around a ‘roots’ theme that draws inspiration from what lies beneath the ground. The highly Instagramable Winter Cathedral, will however, be returning — featuring more than 100,000 lights. Premier Roger Cook heralded the tiny cabins as a “new era” for the park. “Kings Park is one of WA’s best attractions, and my Government wants to bring Kings Park to life,” Mr Cook said. “This is the start of a new era for Kings Park, as we explore new opportunities for hospitality and accommodation in the park itself. “That means more for visitors to do as they experience one of the world’s biggest and best inner-city parks.” Tourism lobbyists have long called for expanding the offerings to visitors in Kings Park, with talks around building a cable car from the park to Elizabeth Quay flaring up one-and-off for more than 50 years. Environment Minister Reece Whitby said the tiny cabins struck the right balance between tourism and conservation. “I want Western Australia’s environment to be as accessible as possible,” the minister said. “That way, tourists and visitors can experience, learn about, and enjoy what makes our State so special.” Lightscape is delivered by the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority with Sony, along with support from Roy Hill and the City of Perth. Perth MP and State Government minister John Carey said he was sure Heyscape’s cabins would be “the hottest ticket in town”. Tickets for Lightscape are on sale now at Ticketek.
