AFL Draft 2024: Bo Allan, Hamish Davis among 10 West Australians set to make the big leagues

The top 10 draft prospects from Western Australia will look to put their best foot forward in front of recruiters and list bosses at the National Draft Combine in Melbourne this weekend. Meet the newest stars from the west. Bo Allan Height: 191cm Weight: 84kg Position: Key Defender/Midfielder Club: Peel Thunder The best prospect out of WA, Allan is nearly a lock to be the first player from the state read out on draft night. Allan is fresh off a WAFL league premiership with Peel Thunder where he played both as a third tall defender and a midfielder. The teenager captains WA at the Under-18 Championships and was named in the All-Australian team on a wing, even though that is not where he is best served. Allan is mature for his age, a natural leader and seen as a ready-made AFL player. Hamish Davis Height: 190cm Weight: 85kg Position: Forward/Midfield Club: Claremont The longer the year has gone, the higher the stocks have risen for Davis. A co-captain of the Tigers’ colts premiership side, he made headlines with four goals in the league elimination final win over East Fremantle. Davis finished the season with seven league appearances for the Tigers, but starred in the colts grand final with 30 touches to win the Mel Whinnen Medal as the best on ground. At the risk of putting pressure on the young man, there is a bit of Nat Fyfe about Hamish Davis. Kayle Gerreyn Height: 199cm Weight: 99kg Position: Ruck/Forward Club: West Perth Gerreyn is a monster of a man and looks to still have a bit of growing to do. Slightly undersized for a ruckman, Gerreyn forced his way into the Falcons’ league side by the end of the season where he didn’t look out of place. Stood out with two goals against South Fremantle in the final league game of the year before returning to the colts side where he was incredible in the finals. In the first final he had 23 touches, 29 hit-outs and two goals before backing it up against Swan Districts with 16 touches, eight marks, 23 hit-outs and another two goals. Clancy Dennis Height: 192cm Weight: 75kg Position: Key Defender Club: Claremont A quiet achiever of the WA Under-18 side, Dennis joined skipper Allan as the only two All-Australians for the year. Dennis is a reliable defender who also doesn’t mind getting his hands on the footy, as proven by one game where he had 12 marks and 25 touches against Peel Thunder. Unfortunately, a foot injury means he won’t be testing at the National Draft Combine, but he is definitely in draft calculations. Averaged 11.2 disposals and 5.2 marks in the National Championships while also locking down the opposition’s best key forward. Aiden Riddle Height: 199cm Weight: 92kg Position: Ruckman Club: Claremont An over-age ruckman who dominated at the contest and developed his forward game. Riddle can move well for a big man and is smart with his positioning around the ground. It’s his tap work where he stands out, dominating the rucks in the WAFL colts for most of the season. Really developed this year to become a standout for the WA Under-18 side. Cody Angove Height: 182cm Weight: 66kg Position: Forward Club: Claremont Another player with plenty of pace, Angove loves to work up the ground and then power back to have an impact forward of centre. Has a knack of hitting the scoreboard as well as racking up plenty of touches to have an influence. A two-time colts premiership player at Claremont, Angove had a quiet start to the year but finished strongly with a highlight being four goals against East Perth in round 17. Luke Urquhart Height: 190cm Weight: 76kg Position: Midfielder Club: East Fremantle The good news story of this year’s draftable talent from WA. Urquhart overcame serious injury last year to be a standout inside midfielder for East Fremantle and the WA Under-18 side. A strong clearance player who bursts from contests and isn’t afraid to lay some strong tackles. His disposal efficiency is the biggest knock on his game, but seems to always be in the contest no matter where the game is heading. Jaxon Artemis Height: 180cm Weight: 65kg Position: Wing/Half-Back Club: South Fremantle This young man has pace to burn and he’s not afraid to showcase it. Artemis was named WA’s MVP for the national championships and stiff to miss out on All-Australian selection after averaging 15.5 disposals and five rebounds for WA across half-back. The young Bulldog is an attacking machine who is composed with ball in hand and has a great sense of when to defend as well. Prepare to see him be up there in the 20m sprint. Will Hayes Height: 179cm Weight: 68kg Position: Wing Club: Claremont A smart wingman who is in the Andrew Gaff-mould. Hayes holds his space well, runs hard all day and makes good decisions with the ball in hand. He has great vision when going forward and is the ultimate link-up man for a powerhouse Claremont side. Another player who won two consecutive colts premierships for the Tigers as part of the incredible dynasty. Malakai Champion Height: 172cm Weight: 66kg Position: Small Forward Club: Subiaco The kid from Kalgoorlie is almost certain to land at West Coast after being part of their Next Generation Program. Champion gave them a glimpse of his immense talent with three goals against the Eagles’ WAFL side in his league debut for Subiaco. From Mines Rovers, Champion is quick with his feet and applies plenty of pressure as a defensive forward, but can change to offense at the blink of an eye. Is smart and can develop into a midfielder as he goes on. Has already trained at West Coast and will likely end up there.
