Ashton Turner heroics not enough as worst ever-bowling performance sees Perth Scorchers fall
Perth Scorchers season is all but over after Steve Smith battered their title hopes into submission despite a late assault from captain Ashton Turner at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Having elected to bowl first, the decision to bring back Andrew Tye proved disastrous with the veteran producing the equal third worst figures in Big Bash history with 0/62 off his four overs.
The Sixers, led by Smith’s incredible 121 from 64 balls, produced the highest-ever Big Bash total at the SCG with 3/220 which is also the highest total the Scorchers have ever conceded.
Needing a miracle Finn Allen and Sam Fanning got the Scorchers off to the required fast start but Allen fell for 15 trying to maintain the tempo before Aaron Hardie’s horror form continued falling for a golden duck.
Cooper Connolly showed why he was picked for Sri Lanka taking a liking to Todd Murphy in a partnership of 55 with Fanning before he holed out to point with scoreboard pressure mounting.
With the game seemingly over at 6/129 after 14 overs, captain Ashton Tuner raged against the dying of the light with 65 off just 31 balls in a partnership of 76 with Matthew Spoors to leave the Scorchers needing an unlikely 23 from the final over.
However, Sixers captain Moises Henriques ensured there would be no late twist conceding just eight with Turner only managing to face two balls in the final over.
The 14-run defeat effectively ends the Scorchers’ title hopes as they now have to win their final two games and hope a host of other results go their way to stay in the hunt.
The Scorchers made three changes from their loss to the Melbourne Renegades with Sam Fanning returning to the top of the order with Aaron Hardie sliding down to three in place of resting Mitch Marsh.
Tye returned in place of Matt Kelly while Perth left out the in-form Lance Morris to bring in Spoors as the second spinner as they opted for a slow attack on a sticky wicket.
Following a steady start after Behrendorff removed Josh Phillipe for nine the Sixers feasted on poor bowling off Tye who returned in place of Matt Kelly smashing 30 runs off his first two overs in which he failed to find his length.
Connolly, who removed Kurtis Patterson, dropped a tough caught and bowled chance with Smith on 32 as the Sixers raced to 2/80 off the first 10 overs having been 1/19 after the powerplay.
Smith brought up his 50 off 36 balls with a cut shot that went straight through the legs of point on a poor day in the field for the Scorchers as the Sixers went to another level in the power surge.
They took 24 runs off Jye Richardson’s first over, taking 32 runs in total as Smith reached deep into his bag of tricks
He produced several switch hits and used incredible hands to continually manipulate the ball to the short boundary no matter how wide the Scorchers bowled leaving the bowlers bereft of answers.
He was well supported by captain Moises Henriques who attacked from the get-go on his way to 46 before Ashton Agar looked to stop the bleeding by trapping him LBW.
However, with a monster platform set Ben Dwarshuis (23 off 7) only added to the Scorchers’ pain hitting his first two balls for six off Tye.
Tye thought his horror day was over when Dwarshuis was caught at mid-wicket off his last ball only for it to be called a no-ball on height.
Dwarshuis then carved four through the hands of Richardson at short man to bring up Tye’s unwanted record.
Sam Fanning looked to deny Smith a century after diving over the rope to save six but Behrendorff wasn’t alive to the rebound catch as Smith brought up his third BBL century off just 58 balls just one delivery later.
He hit three sixes off Behrendorff’s final over with Nick Hobson just stepping on the rope when completing a relay catch to ensure Smith finished not out as the Sixers plundered 58 runs off the final three overs.
Spoors, who was brought in for Morris bowled just one over while Richardson finished with career-worst figures of 0/51 with only Ahston Agar avoiding the slaughter taking 1/27 off his four overs.
