The West Test: WA Cricket chief executive Christina Matthews admits crowd was lean, but new concept a success

Christina Matthews concedes she would have liked more fans at Optus Stadium for Australia’s win over Pakistan but has declared The West Test concept an early success. The outgoing WA Cricket chief executive hit back at critics who were quick to jump on Perth over its crowd numbers and is confident the city will get around Tests against India and England in the next two years as their push to solidify a mid-December time slot continues. Australia beat Pakistan by 360 runs in the First Test as David Warner peeled off a back-against-the-wall 164, Nathan Lyon took his 500th Test wicket and hometown hero Mitch Marsh was named Player of the Match. A total of 59,125 punters rolled through Optus Stadium for the four days of the Test, a figure which has been slammed on the other side of the country. Former Australian all-rounder Simon O’Donnell was among those to criticise the crowd figure, describing the attendance as “deplorable”. But Matthews was confident she saw enough in the one-sided affair against Pakistan to suggest bigger crowds were to come for series against India and England in the next two summers. “We would have liked a few more, but if you look at it historically, it was 30 or 40 per cent above what we have ever had for Pakistan in a Test match before,” she told The West Australian. “Obviously the pitch and the ground were really good, the atmosphere around the public was really good, our members attendance was pretty good, so I think overall we are pretty happy with it. “It is kind of the first stage of trying to build the Test match into an event. “Like most things in sport we look at all these things romantically and what might have happened before and in different circumstances, but we wouldn’t have got that many people here at the WACA Ground. Really happy with how it worked out.” Matthews also defended the venue itself after years of criticism over its atmosphere for cricket, as opposed to the bigger-drawing football clubs and special events. “Yeah, I do think they are (quick to criticise). We are the only State that moved stadiums in the modern time of cricket,” she said. “People think about the past and the romanticism and the emotional connection of the WACA Ground, so it is a bit frustrating —particularly when people say Optus is not a cricket ground. “It is every bit a cricket ground as the MCG and the SCG or any other ground, just without the history. “The players love playing there, from the people I talk to they love going there and they are proud of it as a ground.” It came amid a concerted effort to give the Test its own identity. Officials are hoping for Perth’s event to nail down its own time slot and become as recognisable as matches in Melbourne and Sydney. Matthews said she was happy with how the newly-rebranded The West Test and the implanted WACA-style hill landed with punters. The artificial turf hill was being stripped out of the stadium on Monday and Matthews shut down the prospect of it returning for other events, like Perth Scorchers home games, anytime soon. “I was really happy because from a media point of view, everybody was using it and from what I could tell, people were really comfortable with referring to it as The West Test and having a bit of ownership over here of it,” she said. “I think it was a success and sort of first go of doing something like that, so we will build from there. “It is just a bit of fun and people took it that way. It got a bit of attention, which was good ... it gave families a chance to do something a bit different. “It’s not needed in the Big Bash, for various reasons. The Big Bash is a shorter game, (and) we have much bigger crowds, so those seats have already sold. “And you want to have distinct experiences from Test cricket to BBL, so I can’t see it expanding like that, but when we were talking about it, one of the things I spoke to Cricket Australia about was ensuring it just wasn’t a this year thing, doing it year after year so people get used to it. “Their response was that that is their intentions, so hopefully we will get it again.” Perth Test crowd numbers
