Twenty20 World Cup: Australia face Scotland in final group stage game to decide England’s super-eight fate
Australia did it the hard way, but survived an almighty scare from Scotland to record a narrow win and save England from elimination at the T20 World Cup.
Recap the action in our blog below.
Wrapping up
That’ll do us for our live coverage as the Aussies got the result we all expected - but fair to say not in the manner we anticipated.
Australia’s first match in the super eights stage of the World Cup will be at 8.30am (WA time) on Friday - we’ll catch you then!
Marsh speaks
Mitch Marsh: “Scotland are a really good outfit. They took it down to the wire, and it was a good chase in the end”.
Says whenever his team has been challenged, it brings the best out of the group.
Says chat about England and controlling their fate was “more externally rather than internally”.
Analysis
Here’s Jackson Barrett on the biggest takeaways from a strange old game and a bizarre scenario.
Stoinis POTM
Marcus Stoinis is named the game’s best player.
Says patience was key, and says Head changed the game in the over with three sixes before getting out.
Thrilling finish
“They’ll be disappointed, Scotland, but they can also be very, very proud,” Ricky Ponting says on the broadcast.
“They’ve just stumbled at the last hurdle.”
Head (69) and Stoinis (59) did most of the damage with a steadying partnership for Australia before putting their foot down when it was required.
David then played his finishing role well - despite some assistance from the field - to notch an unbeaten 24 off 14.
GAME OVER!
But not before some drama!
David gets dropped on the boundary with Australia needing 3 from 4, with the skied ball at deep midwicket spilled.
David then closes it out with a towering six to eliminate Scotland and keep England in the tournament. The Aussies home with two balls to spare!
ONE OVER LEFT: 5 RUNS NEEDED
Five required off the last for England to stay alive in the World Cup.
David will be on strike, and it’ll be Brad Wheal to bowl pace.
Can the Scots pull a rabbit out of a hat?
9 needed off 8
No boundaries through the first four balls of the penultimate over as David comes back on strike...
Two overs left: Australia require 13
David smokes another boundary with an unorthodox tennis slice kind of shot, and this thing is all but over.
David goes bang, bang!
Consecutive boundaries for Tim David behind the wicket!
Equation now 18 off 15 and it should be in hand for Australia from here.
