Former Docker Lee Spurr throws support behind Fremantle’s pursuit of ‘supreme talent’ Kysaiah Pickett

A former Docker has thrown his support behind Fremantle’s pursuit of “supreme talent” Kysaiah Pickett. Sources told The West Australian this week the Melbourne premiership star is desperate to return home to Western Australia at the end of 2025 and that “a lot would have to go wrong” for him to not end up in purple next season. Club insiders also told The West that signing the 23-year-old, who is contracted for another three seasons at the Demons, was a high priority for the Dockers. Lee Spurr believes his former club would be doing themselves and their supporters a disservice if they weren’t pouncing on the opportunity to lure him home. “Kozzy is a supreme talent, there is no doubt,” he told The West Australian. “You look what he did in his first couple of years. He’s exciting, he’s electric. “If he’s on the table and he wants to come, you have to entertain that and have a discussion about it. “You wouldn’t be doing the members and fans and club the service if you didn’t entertain that. You’d be open to that, of course.” Pickett remains tied to the Demons until the end of 2027, which is set to put the Dockers at a disadvantage in a potential trade. Complicating matters further is the looming joust for Sydney star Chad Warner. Both West Coast and Fremantle have strong interest in the 23-year-old, who is out of contract at season’s end. But Spurr believes it’s possible for the Dockers to land both Pickett and Warner. However, a trade with the Swans surrendering a “talented” player of their own. “What’s been (reported) about him (Pickett) showing interest to come, that he wants to come to Freo, that’s half the battle right there. You’ve already got a tick in that box.” Spurr said. “It’s always good to have a player that wants to come and it’s a good sign for Freo. It’s a good sign for their list, for their culture that players from over east want to come back and want to come back in that prime era of their career. “They’re not looking to come back at the very end and finish their careers in their last couple of years, they want to come and be a part of the success Freo are looking to build. There are lots of ticks there. “Don’t be desperate to get him (Pickett) across but if the deal is right and he wants to come, and you can still keep that window open for Chad and keep aggressively pursuing that, I think Freo should continue doing that.” The Dockers could also be preparing for life after veteran and club great Michael Walters in their pursuit of Pickett. The 34-year-old enters the final of his two-year deal with Fremantle in 2025, in what will be his 17th AFL season. The recruitment of Shai Bolton has bolstered their small forward stocks but Walters’ impending retirement, likely at this end of this year, could create more demand in the Dockers’ forward line.
