The kicking and guile of Ben Hunt and Adam Reynolds loom as a gigantic threat to the Dolphins in the "Battle of Brisbane".

The veteran 34-year-old Broncos halves are just warming to their new combination and Hunt says there is a lot more improvement to come.

With persistent rain forecast for the Friday night derby at Suncorp Stadium, the winless Dolphins can be sure their back three of Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Jamayne Isaako and Jack Bostock will be tested with a suite of grubber kicks and floating bombs.

Reynolds tormented North Queensland on a rainy night in Brisbane in a 38-12 win in round four last year. Three of his towering kicks were dropped by the Cowboys' back three and led to tries, while a pinpoint grubber set up Kotoni Staggs for a try.

The same formula is set to be in operation against the Dolphins. Tabuai-Fidow is down on confidence and form. Isaako is also struggling to find his best while Bostock has played one game since returning from a knee injury.

Broncos coach Michael Maguire was Reynolds' mentor at South Sydney and said he was looking forward to watching his bombs.

"I hope he is doing it again," Maguire said.

"I have been fortunate to see Adam as an 18-year-old and his kicking game was probably the highlight of when I first met Reyno. He has excelled and grown with what he has been doing for years.

"If (bombs are) what is required, I'm sure Reyno will be able to bring that at the right times."

The Broncos duo of Hunt and Reynolds boast 627 games between them and thrive in the key moments of big games, as the cross-town derby most assuredly is.

Reynolds showcased all his artistry last week in the 26-16 win over the Cowboys when he turned the match with a try assist, via a kick, and a try of his own in the first half.Hunt has been integral in left winger Jesse Arthars scoring five tries in three games with his slick passing game and deception.

"I am happy with where it is tracking. I still think there is a lot of improvement in us," Hunt said.

"We were a lot better (against the Cowboys). Reyno focused really hard on improving his kicking game, he was pretty disappointed with that (in the loss to Canberra). But on a whole, there is still improvement."

The duo can still develop their linking play, a feature of the great Kevin Walters and Allan Langer partnership of the 1990s at Brisbane.

"In a way, we are similar players so we are just working on how we can get together and work on different plays and how we gel," Hunt said.

"Reyno missed a lot of of the pre-season as well (with a neck injury), so it's just about working on our combinations."
