Main Roads on the spot for arum lily infestations rampant through Capes reserves

Main Roads WA is under pressure to clean up its act and substantially increase its help in the war against an invasive weed species. The agency was singled out following Times inquiries about swathes of arum lily in public reserves along the Vasse and Busselton bypasses and other roadways controlled by the peak State Government roads agency. Multiple stakeholders expressed private frustration pleas to join the region-wide fight against the invasive South African pest had gone unheard. City of Busselton infrastructure and environment director Oliver Darby said Main Roads had been approached by “numerous stakeholders to control arum lily”. Nature Conservation Margaret River Region’s ongoing Arum Lily Blitz sought to eradicate the weed from the region, but required greater buy-in from peak agencies as well as further support in addition to recent State Government funding. Several conservation sources reiterated frustration at Main Roads’ perceived lack of action, but Nature Conservation general manager Drew McKenzie listed the agency as one of the big groups taking part in this year’s blitz. A Main Roads spokesperson said the agency acknowledged the challenge of the invasive species, and said it was “actively involved in addressing the issue”. “In fact, we have progressively increased our efforts and coverage as part of our annual treatment program,” the spokesperson said. However, late rains had affected the timing of chemical treatments, which “requires a precise approach”. “It is important to note that while we are addressing arum lily infestations along our road reserves, large infestations in nearby forests and private properties can affect the overall success and timing of eradication efforts,” the Main Roads spokesperson said. “It often takes several years of consistent treatment — up to five years — to see significant improvement in affected areas. “We remain committed to working within our available resources and continuing our efforts to manage this issue.” Mr McKenzie said without all stakeholders getting involved, infestations would be hard to control outside areas of high biodiversity value.
